May be because they have two legs ??
-
Maybe the term arose from "pair of leggings" or "pair of hose"... didn't medieval people wear hose-ish thingies instead of pants?
-
I think its cause it has to pant legs does that make sense? oh well sorry
-
i guess it is like scissors... a pair of scissors... half of it would be scissor i suppose... then some people use the word pair in front of undies... i guess because they have two leg openings?
-
It's got something to do with the two legs. Like, it's a pair of pants, but then there's also "pant leg" as in "Dude, what the hell did you just spill on my pant leg?" Same thing with everything else that is a pair in itself--there's always two of something on it.

We could not say a pair of pants is because of the two legs.. Then if we did we would have to say a pair of shirt.. because of the to arms.. I wish I knew.. lol

Then why not call a bra, a "pair of bra's". Me no-know.

Before the days of modern tailoring, garments were made in two parts. In the case of pants, one for each leg. Each piece was put on each leg separately, then tied or belted at the waist. We continue to use the plural usage even though pants are now physically one piece. Source(s): http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-pai1...
