basically: as long as you don't intentionally disseminate statements about me that are defamatory and demonstrably (prove-ably) false, any insult that you "throw at me" is protected by law. For example: if you called me a child molester, that would be defamatory and I could probably prove to a court's satisfaction that it was not true (because it isn't true, and because I have no history of such). But if you were to call me a jerk or a fool or something more...colorful but equally vague, then yes: your speech is protected by law and I would have no legal recourse.
