    Mayonnaise is a particular TYPE of dressing...with a particular FLAVOR and INGREDIENTS. Compare, for example, to oil-and-vinegar based salad dressings, or even to creamy salad dressings (which are often not mayonnaise-based). Also: unlike most other types of salad dressing (Ranch is an exception), mayo is typically used for things other than salads.
