Definitely American, both in invention and in substance (potatoes are native to the Americas, unknown to the Old World in pre-Columbian times). * Other contenders (with similar characteristics): roast turkey, pumpkin pie, popcorn (the pre-Columbian Native Americans had this), the ice cream cone (note that both vanilla and chocolate are native to the Americas, unknown to the Old World in pre-Columbian times), any dish featuring biscuits (surprisingly they don't have American-style biscuits in the UK, or in other nations as far as I know, except in American restaurants like KFC)
