  • It depends. There is usually an agreement you must click on to acknowledge you read (nobody ever does) that says you agree not to reverse engineer the software etc. So, that alone makes the legality a little bit funky, at least at the civil level. Criminally, probably not, though, although, if you reverse engineered a piece of software and then made a bunch of money selling your own copy of it, you'd be in such serious civil legal trouble that I don't think you'd be super concerned about a digital larceny charge.
