  • Yes. The Vatican wanted priests to be celibate because they could interit but not pass the inheritance on except for the church.
  • Well...even the Roman Catholic Church admits that that is quite a precedent. *** However: celibacy as a job requirement was not at all unusual in the time that the Catholics made that a "rule" in their church. For example: in the U.S. as late as the 1800s it wasn't at all unusual for teachers in small towns in "the West" to be required to be single woman of unimpeachable reputation (or: widowed without children at home). It was supposed that a married woman ought to take care of husband and children and home, and so if the teacher were to marry, she would lose her job. *** And (slightly off-topic) I think that's something that many people don't get about Catholic priests. Celibacy is a job requirement. A priest wants to marry? Well...he can, and he won't be kicked out of the Catholic Church if he does...but he will have to give up his job as priest. *** But to answer the question directly: yes, I think it's rather silly for Catholics not to allow priests to marry, but it's their rule, and kudos for them sticking to it when NOT sticking to it would definitely be to their advantage.
  • Priestly celibacy is a "small t" tradition that was started by a pope around 1000 years ago. It is not "Capital T" tradition which is dogmatic and can't be changed. Since a pope instituted the custom, a pope can also cancel or modify it. 3/30/23
