They aren't producing their own and the U.S. is not producing any so can't export any to them and the machine has to keep running so where else are they going to get it?

It's because their economies would be extremely hard-hit if they suddenly stopped buying Russian petroleum and natural gas products. Why? Because they aren't self-sufficient (with regard to petroleum and natural gas products) and there are not ready supplies from alternative sources. Solution? Arrange for other suppliers, and as those suppliers are able to supply, reduce dependence on Russian fuel. Note that the U.S. has already claimed it is able (we have enough and to spare) and ready and willing to replace Russian natural gas. However: there's still the matter of other petroleum products, especially gasoline, diesel and (for the Winter) heating oil. Wealthier EU nations ARE ALREADY arranging for alternate supplies, but it will probably take AT LEAST several months before alternate supplies are able to replace current Russian supplies.
