  • Not safe. The brain is wired to recognize sweetness as potential incoming calories. It then prepares to process the calories. When you eat artificial sweeteners, the brain picks up on the sweet taste and readies itself to receive the calories it thinks will follow. When the calories never arrive, the brain turns on the hunger response to get the "promised" calories from food, which results in more calories than expected. This is the reason you see so many obese people eating a big meal and drinking a diet soda but it does no good.
