why do corporate earnings really matter for the stock market? is this all a facade maybe? why for example did Tesla's price fall after it reported much better than expected earnings?

is this all a "smoke and mirrors" game to help create the facade that stock trading is any different than playing a casino game? like poker, etc? why? can explain?
