  • Uninformed. Chronic lack of information leads to stupidity.

With the internet, young people have easier access to tons more information (and misinformation) than we ever had before. I really don't think lack of information is the problem, so much as lack of critical thinking.

I think the problem is that they don't look for information. They take what they hear as gospel. I think that leads to poor thinking because they don't have all the facts. Facts aren't as important anymore as feelings. Good book I read a few years ago. https://www.amazon.com/Dumbest-Generation-Stupefies-Americans-Jeopardizes-ebook/dp/B0015DWN8I

Ah, I tried reading that book. I didn't finish it, though. It seemed too condescending in tone, without offering any actionable changes to solve the problems it observes. The younger generation now coming of age has had a completely different environment from the older generation that is now dwindling into twilight. It's a big topic, but I agree with Bauerlein's observation of how personal responsibility is no longer a priority, and the younger generation's problems are a reflection of that culture shift, but I think that there are also a lot of nuances in how to best try to combat it.

@64 - I might be a little old school, but I believe it's a lack of proper parenting. No discipline. Lack of respect. Lack of responsibility. These should all be taught at home, and it's not happening. The worse part is, the next generation is going to be even worse. When the Tide Pod eaters start having kids, imagine what they're going to be doing.

In the 60's, it was the beatnik's smoking pot; in the 70's, the hippies swallowing pills; in the 80's, crack, video games, etc.; in the 90's, kids were holding their breath until they passed out... every generation is just as stupid as the last, they just find stupider ways to go about doing it, I suppose.

It's thinning the herd for as much as I'm concerned. They need to stop giving these dummies Narcan shots every other day and let them kill themselves off.

I agree that a huge part of the problem is poor parenting. But I don't think our youth are stupid. I think they are capable of solving any problems that face their world when we are gone.
    • Linda Joy
@marandam, were you trying to show us how stupid you can be?
    • Archie Bunker
Sorry Linda. I don't have the same faith in our youth that you do.
  • Nope. I blame the stupid people that gave birth to them and brought them up.
  • They're hooked on smartphones (it's not just our youth). Smartphones make people stupid.
    • Linda Joy
Like computers, smartphones are just a tool. Frankly my phone has made me smarter because I use it to look things up and learn. For the record I don't think our youth are stupid.
  • Yes But also genius😋😎
