  • Some of the files in your picture are read only, not all of them.
  • You're looking at your C: folder, the root of C. The green square means that some of the files on your drive are read-only but not all. If it were empty, it would mean no files on your system are read only. If it were checked, it would mean all of them are. That square is Microsoft's way of saying only some are.
