If you are on "true" time, midnight is exactly half way through the hours of darkness. In summer, these may be short hours, in winter they may be longer hours, but true midnight is half way through them. However, since people are organized into timezones, it can only be true midnight along one north/south line. And even so, people tend to warp the clock for their own purposes. For example, London is only on true time in the winter. In the summer, the clocks are moved forward so that midnight comes too early, and the true middle of the night is when the clock say 1 am.
