Originally they played in theatres so that the weekly/daily audience (before TV) would know what the next movies coming to the theatre were going to be. Now they are used for promotions not only in theatres but when the stars of the film are on talk shows promoting the movie, or shows that are devoted to the movies like Etalk, Entertainment Tonight etc. can show a bit of the movie without giving it all away. In some cases I've seen the trailer(clip) was better than the movie!

Sometimes to mislead you into paying a lot of money to see crap. They only show you the good parts of the movie. Case in point: The Postman with Kevin Costner
