  • Sure, why would weather make a difference. Either you need it or you don't. USe it.
  • Jake brakes are always useful, especially in wet weather. If it's loud, don't use it to intimidate other drivers, as I've seen some truckers do.
  • Jake Breaks should not be used when there is a chance the tractor unit will slow faster than the unit being pulled. It could cause a jack knife effect. This includes gravel roads, slick roads, water or ice or snow. Don't do it you will not recover from a jack knife, no way.
  • An engine brake (jake brake) simply slows the vehicle by slowing the rotation speed engine thus not locking up the wheels, providing safer stopping power in undesired conditions
  • No, Jake Brakes should not be used in wet weather! Nor snow or ice! This will cause you to jack knife. what a Jake brake does is decompresses your engine which slows your rpms. when you are in gear, this causes your drive tires to turn slower, in wet, icey, snowy conditions it will cause you to loose traction and your trailer will push you into a jack knife.
  • I understand with a tractor trailer but what about a rigid body like a fire truck. Would their be a reason to not use the jake brake when roads are wet/icy?
