  • As of the census of 2000, there were 2,395 people, 938 households, and 601 families residing in the town. The population density was 259.8/km sq (673.5/mi sq). There were 1,043 housing units at an average density of 113.1/km sq (293.3/mi sq). The racial makeup of the town was 75.70% White, 22.46% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population. There were 938 households out of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 18.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.96.
