Put them very gently back and hope the hen goes back to the nest and the chicks have not died of fright. I have replacd chicks in a nest before

-- we have a metal fish hanging on our porch, used as a candle-holder type thing, except birds use it as a nesting place. The wind knocked the fish to the ground, I looked and the chicks were knocked out of it, as well as an egg, and I can't tell if they're dead. EDIT-- A woman I faintly know walked by. Seeing as she works with vets sometimes, I asked her... she looked at them -- the one that has been opening it's mouth before isn't moving. She said they're dead... one was just hatched, I think... If I would have quicker, it wouldn't have happened. :( Thank you for answering, though.

i'd just leave it and watch to make sure no evil doers drop by to cause harm. the mommy bird won't like the smell of humans on her chicks and may reject them.

Oh dear. What are the chicks like, are they naked? If so gently return them to the nest and return the nest to the tree. If they are fluffy chicks observe them for a short time, if they don't make an attempt to fly then you should return them to the nest and return it to the tree. We should only intervene if absolutley necessary. If the nest is damaged you could put it in a box just big enough to keep the nest together and put the box securely in the tree. Remember don't put yourself at risk, if you are not an adult get an adult to help sort this out.
