  • SmartLipo laser lipolysis is growing in popularity, but it's not without risks. Here are the most common problems patients experience after the procedure.

    The Procedure

SmartLipo is conducted with local anesthesia, meaning that you won't be asleep during the procedure. This is done to take away the risks typically associated with general anesthesia.

    Infections

As with any surgery, however, the most common risk is infection, which can have serious complications, up to and including death. It's important to follow post-operative care instructions and keep your scheduled follow-up appointments to make sure you're healing well.

    Common Temporary Side Effects

According to the SmartLipo company, minor bruising and numbness should be gone within days, swelling should be gone in about a week and your skin should be totally back to normal in three months.

    Other Side Effects

Side effects include burns from the laser and a build-up of fluid at the treatment site, scarring, pain (doctors prescribe painkillers after the procedure), tingling, lumpiness, discoloration and sagging skin.

    Putting It in Perspective

While there are always risks with surgery, cosmetic surgeons largely agree that this procedure is safer than conventional liposuction, and there are rarely any long-term side effects.
