As Captain William Driver left on a world voyage in 1831, he was given a 24-star flag. Out on the ocean with the flag unfurled, he looked at it and said, "Old Glory." The flag later flew over the capital of Tennessee. Since then the nickname for American flags has been "Old Glory."
