Can a Missouri car dealer sell a car and issue temporary tag without inspection?
I think I messed up :(
I bought a 2001 model used car from a Missouri used car dealer. I signed the title, application for title and license, the "as is, no warranty" paper. Then I was handed those documents and a handful of others that went with the car.(including a 30 day temp tag for the back window) The problem is I didn't look to make sure they handed me a current inspection slip before I left, which I thought was required for a dealer to sell a car. I went to go pay sales tax on the car the other day and get license plates, but couldn't find the inspection slip. The DMV said I would need a valid inspection and the dealer was supposed to provide one. They said that the dealer was not even supposed to issue a temporary tag because they (the DMV) couldn't even issue a temp without a valid inspection. Someone told me the only way they could legally sell the car with no inspection is to have me sign an affidavit that I was buying the car for junk or rebuilding purposes. And also, if I would have done that, there would be no legal way for the dealership to sell me a temp tag and affix it to my window. So I called the dealership and asked about it since I thought it was something they must have just forgot to hand me. Turns out the car was never inspected.
Ok, so I'll just go get the car inspected then it's only twelve bucks...
Uhhg, it didn't pass inspection.
Now I have to pay for repairs to get it to pass and also a penalty if the repair process takes long enough ...
