  • On a very general level, the computer system is the hardware. The "information" is the bios and programming. If you're looking at a degree program, you'll see IS and CIS (Information systems and Computer Information Systems) used interchangably. On a side note - before the Americans developed personal computers, the French had developed an early predecessor called a Microtel. Their version of the Internet was "Informatique" and computer programmers today in France are known as "informaticiens". It wasn't as user-friendly as the early PCs, and was soon eclipsed by the greater flexibility offered by the US. But the name "information" lingers on as a legacy to the early French developments.
