Not expecting an eternity of bathing in milk and living alongside koalas and be reunited with our loved ones who died before us, which is actually damn creepy if you ask me, atheists learn to live and appreciate life for what it's worth while it lasts, instead of wasting away with delusions in the hopes that we'll live forever after death.

Because I take my own responsibility of being happy. Which is real. I don't suffer from the burden of religious guilt, I don't have the fear of not going to heaven, and I appreciate life to it's fullest.

By not worrying endlessly about what will happen to them after their life is over. Or fretting about how some omnipresent force for good allows so much evil to exist

I'm a Christian but I can tell you that it doesn't take God to make you "happy". Happiness is fleeting, happiness depends on your circumstances and your situation. It's JOY that comes from the Lord. True JOY is something only the Lord can impart.

Peace, contentment, and acceptance. Show me a culture that doesn't see these as wise values. Happiness has never been dependent on religion, spirituality, or anything else except for mindset.

Probably the same ways and same reasons anyone can be happy.

I was an athiest because I was never going to pretend anything I did not understand for sure. I was very depressed at the thought that life really had little meaning. Thank goodness I discovered otherwise.

Well, some of the same things that work for some Christians work for us: - rent a hooker; - watch television and pretend; - read to escape reality; - mock other people's religion; - pretend; - make our kids behave and do well so that we can glory in their apparent success You know, the usual.

So we must assume that every religious household is completely surrounded everyday with nothing but happiness, right? You and I and everybody else know that that's not true.

EVERYBODY has the right to be happy. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and beliefs. I believe that every person on this earth has the utmost right to be happy with or without religion.

I am really sick of believers who seem to think they have an exclusive on living morally, being happy and being good responsible citizens. It's hogwash. Look at the lives of many prominent right wing Bible thumpers in public life and you see them having homosexual and heterosexual affairs, buying sexual favors, using drugs, evading taxes, advocating murder, molesting children, divorcing et cetera. Oh, I might add these are the so called leaders of the so called moral majority. It's a lie. For myself I would rather act responsibly, live and love well, respect others, care for my family the community and the world and find my happiness in these things than in some myth of an eternal reward. Oh and while I am at it...this idea of a heaven that only lets true believers in is hogwash as well. The Evangelicals, the Baptists, the Catholics, the...well there are too many to mention them all and so on all seem to think theirs is the one true way. How can that be?

I am happy because I don't need anything external to give me hope. I understand that my behavior is a reflection of ME not someone else. So the fact that I try and be a good person isn't based on a faith, it is within me. Do I give up heaven? Well, you inherit hell.

Well I mean not believing in hell or any other wacky afterlife kinda solves most of the problem and then all the good fun I can have without the guilt of sin pretty much makes for a lot of happiness. I guess sleeping in on sabbath days is the cherry on top.

I am not to sure but I think they can function just fine with out any body giving them a hard time, because there a lot of shit going on in this world right now with the believers, and they are doing what the big guy should take care of,wreaking havoc on this world,that is why we see things different, people keep on dieing where is the big guy,when you see baby's and mothers and fathers getting slaughtered every second.

What a strange question. Do you think you need to cling to a fantasy to be happy? In my case I have a wonderful family: a truly darling little girl who makes me laugh a lot, a teenage boy who's talented and considerate (most of the time).

We don't live our lives in fear of a giant, invisible spirit in the sky who might send us to hell. We're free to enjoy every day. How can god-fearing bible-thumpers be happy?  

WHy should they not be? They do not see a god breathing down their neck all the time. They can do whatever they like, and unless they get caught there will never be a reckoning. Death holds no fears except as the end of life. Why not be happy?

Their happiness doesn't have to be derived from religion or spirituality it could be based on living a good full life. Why assume they would not be ?

Many Atheists are free and have a sense of ethics that are real. How can religious people be happy? They live according to unnecessary rules and belief in fantasies, while rejecting ethics and common sense in exchange for scriptures.

Maybe because I can do whatever I want and not feel guilty. And I can be doubly happy of my morality and kindness, because it stems from myself, not outside influences. Also I feel more control over my life, goals and values. Besides being an atheist doesn't mean someone doesn't have faith in anything, hope or love. Just that it doesn't have anything to do with any religious group.

I am happy because I want to be happy. I take control of my life and lead myself where I want to go. I fail to see how atheists should be less happy than believers.

But because of our fear and our previous lack of knowledge about how we came to exist, we created a creator to make sense of our lives. Pagan Gods, men who brought the sun up every day, women who we sacrificed crops to in order for gird fertility of the land. These Gods changed as we did, until eventually we started getting to the point where some of us realized this was all in the name of fear, with no real rational explanation. There and then they started to try and find the true creations of the universe, and scared all those still attached to the Gods into a frenzy of hate. Anyone who tried to further humanity with knowledge was a demon who was there to shake the faith. This is the most backwards thing in all of civilization, and because of their fear they still cling, while slowly us who have realized the truth still try to push it forward in the background, painstakingly, masking it from the creationists so that it does not offend them, so that we can continue in hopes of finding the true origins, the true light at the end of the tunnel. Let go of your fear of nothingness and embrace the true stunning beauty of a short life worth living to change this world and humanity with ideas.

They can be happy to know that their destiny is in their own hands and just a little of fate. No judgement by holy men or any god. People have no evidential perception of a god other than through superstition and wishful thinking.

Here are some ways: a) Have kids , then help and watch them grow and learn. a1) Have grandkids ... ;-)) b) Do something worthwhile. c) find love. d) eat a hearty meal. e) sit and think, or just sit :) f) sports, career, art, charity, sodapop, ... there are lots of ways to be happy, even for atheists.

You don't need religion to be happy. I know some pretty depressed Christians and Muslims.

How can we be happy? Easy. We drink to excess, root anything that moves (don't even worry about species, let alone gender), steal anything we don't already own, slaughter anyone who makes us a bit cross, drug ourselves with anything we can inject, break laws just for fun and dance naked over the graves of priests while soaked in goats blood... I mean, with no gods to do all the above on our behalf, we just gotta get down to it ourselves...

I am a spiritual/religious person. Atheists can be as happy as I am, believing what works for them. Are we becoming so rigid and closed minded that we believe, we are the only ones who are correct?! I am tired of people picking on the atherists. That is ridiculous! We are ALL human.
