When refering to cars, what does "brake horsepower" mean? (Bear in mind I am a girl!)

It means engine power. If an engine had a rating of 1 brake horse power it couldproduce the same energy approximately as one horse pulling. So a car of 70bhp has the same power of 70 average horses pulling at once !

torque is ability of an engine to pull load and so there by power of an engine is how soon that load can be pulled . well as for brake horse power it is what one obtains after subtracting frictional losses (in form of friction between the piston rings and liner , frictional losses in the bearings and loss of power in driving other components of the engine like cams ,cooling fan etc)from indicated horse power ,power which is generated by the combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber
