It depends on how strongly they feel about it. In my family, everybody has their laptops with them, and the kids get great pleasure in sending messages to each other even when sitting next to each other on the couch. I always take mine. The trip to see them takes two days, and I need it in the hotel each way, and there is access at most gas/meal stops as well.

I'd say no. I think that time on vacation is best spent away from computers and cell phones. Also, there is always the potential for loss or breakage of your computer during travel - so unless you're prepared to accept that it got damaged, lost, or stolen - I'd leave it at home.
