I like Les Claypool

I think Flea is awesome as well, but I still have to go with the one whose playing inspired me to become a bassist myself. The late, great John Entwistle of The Who.
-
I like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. Not too much, not too little, right notes at the right time, and a nice, clean tone.
-
John Patitucci, the great jazz electric and acoustic bassist.
-
I would have to say Flea is my favourite as well, but I also like Mike Inez (Alice in Chains and Heart)
-
The late Cliff Burton of Metallica and Steve Harris of Iron Maiden
-
Phil Lipscomb from taproot. He's an absolutely amazing with his Yamaha bass, one of the best that I've heard. He makes me wanna learn how to play the bass(I'm in the beginning stages of learning) I also like Flea, that dude really kicks ass, he rocks.

I must also go with Flea. He's really much more than a bassist... he's a character.
-
John Entwistle of The Who Graham Maby - Joe Jackson Band
-
Many great bassists, for me probably more on a song to song basis, but for a great sounding record, have you listened to The Pretty Things, "Midnight to Six Man" where along with Skip Alan's (17 years old at the time)drumming, & bassist John Fullegar's guitar playing, results in one of the heaviest sounds of the mid 60's.
-
I would have to say Terry Longacre of Common Ground. They're a local Band in & around Sidney,OH. Visit their site for a listen to their original song Twisted Up. http://www.commongroundrock.com

-
Bootsie Colins played in too many Funk bands to list them all here.
-
The awesome John Entwistle, Thunder Fingers, THE OX, of The Who. Jazz-wise I love Stanley Jordan.
-
John Entwistle of the who is a huge influence on me then I'd have to go with Chris Squire of Yes fame, then I'd probably go with Geddy Lee of the legendary band 'Rush', and then I'd probably go with the majority of people that said Flea already and count him as my 4th fav of all time . Though I'm sure theres some amazing talent out there I've never heard of so this is just bass players that come to mind right off the bat.

He may not be technically the best BUT Roger Waters has made a remarkable contribution to music.
-
Les Claypool from primus
-
Geddy Lee, with Paul McCartney a close second.
-
Hubbard from The Roots.
-
Larry Graham, Jr., best known as both the bass player in the popular and influential psychedelic soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone, and as the founder and frontman of Graham Central Station. He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass.
-
Charlie Mingus, the famous jazz bassist.

-
Robert "Kool" Bell, founder of Kool and the Gang.
-
Jaco Pastorius - he was a band leader and played with Joni Mitchell and Weather Report.

-
Most I would pick are already mentioned (the obvious Jacos etc) but some not mentioned: Stanley Clarke Larry Graham Les Claypool Cliff Burton Amongst many others...
-
Victor Wooten and Billy Sheehan.
-
Thank you!
-
Rex Brown from Pantera Tony Campos (i think) from Static-X
-
Paul McCartney from a little band known as The Beatles. I prefer melodic McCartney style melodic basslines over some of the more showoffy stuff people have been picking here. Stuff like Flea doesnt do anything for me.
-
In Rock, it would be Hellmut Hattler from the German rock band Kraan (especially his work on the Live album from 1974). Great bass players in all genres are Robbie Shakespeare and George Oban in Reggae Paul Chambers, Charlie Mingus, Stanley Clarke in Jazz

Bernard Edwards from the band "Chic". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Edwards
-
Jack Bruce,Cream.

Trick question- mine is the solo bassist Michael Manring.
-
Michael Manring!!! Light years ahead of any other bassist. Victor Wooten Jaco Pastorius Edgar Meyer And I know you said no classical, but Gary Karr is the man. He was the first classical bassist to make a living as a soloist.
-
Hm.. that would be Cliff Burton. He was the only significant bass player I'm familiar with

Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He's the only bass player to have won "bass player of the year" more than once and he won 3 years in a row.
-
Victor Wooten and he plays with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He also plays with the Dave Matthews Band.
-
