Forgive me for being technical(philosophical, rather), but silence is more or less only ordered sound. Therefore, if you're hearing silence, then you should only be hearing what is good to hear, or what is necessary. All you hear should be something good for your intellect. Again, sorry, but I wrote a sort of thesis about the necessity of silence last year for school, and it has stuck with me.

Once my ex said that the silence or wind we heard when we were up on a hill was really and accumulation of sounds of everything in the city (traffic, talking, singing, crying, etc;), every sound, all swept up and as we were so high up it was all drowned out to a strange white noise that became our silence. That and sometimes I hear blood rushing to my head that when I was young, I compared to the marching of soldiers. Pretty strange.

Silence doesn't have positive characteristics, only negative ones: it sounds like the lack of sound. (By "negative" I don't mean bad: I just mean that you can only describe sound by saying what it doesn't sound like, not by saying what it does sound like, because it doesn't sound like anything, by its very nature.)
