Well, Kudos were a candy bar at some point, which probably started the usage of the word here in the US. It means 'praises' or 'congratulations on getting it right', usually meant in a warm-hearted manner.

I use kudos alot and when I do I use it to give props to somebody for a good answer. They also use kudos at poetry readings after the poet had finished reciting a rather good poem. The listeners snap their fingers to compliment a job well done.
