Ghost Ship, the 2002 version. It had a really interesting story, it was fun, and exiting to follow. The movie does suffer from some rather long stretches, and you'll miss some bits if you don't pay attention, but mostly, it does its job, I liked it. Plus, some pretty damn disturbing parts, at least for me. Such as the opening dance scene, the can of worms and the ending revelation. It's a ghost story, and a very well crafted one, the people responsible for this film knew their stuff. I also have to nominate Titanic, I know it's corny and everything, but I totally loved it, and still do. >_> I have to mention the Jaws series; just about the cheesiest thing I've ever seen but man, it has one thing that a lot of cheesy horror films don't have; STYLE. Plus, it's really one of the only "wildlife slasher" films that gets it right, even to this day. (Not including insect horror movies, those are within a league all their own.)
-
Perfect Storm comes to mind.
-
I'd have to say 'The Abyss'. I'll also mention 'Deep Rising'. I'm a sucker for a creature flick. Oh, yeah! And 'Cabin Boy'! j/k
-
I would say "Jaws" "Jason and the Argonauts" "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" "The Long Ships"
-
Water world ..
-
Deep Blue Sea is premier cinema.

Almost anything involving submarines, because they ALWAYS make me laugh! Mostly because a lot of it is BS. The best submarine movie ever made, in my opinon, was Das Boot. But even it had it's funny moments. Like the submariner picking his nose and flicking it at someone else. And the best submarine movie for the best quote was Operation Pacific. The quote was about The Chief. You can watch it and find it yourself!
-
The Old Man and the Sea..it was a simple, beautiful movie! Happy Saturday, Barcaluv! :) ((hugs))

Jaws, good movie, good book.

Dead Calm. Great movie. We actually see Nicole Kidman's real face before the surgery and botox. And Sam Neill, he's a fantastic actor.

Happy Saturday morning Barcaluv.....I have several: The Abyss, Titanic, The Guardian and The Perfect Storm. It seems I may be forgetting one, I will have to get back to you. :)

I don't know if it counts for this question, but I would say my favorite is Jaws. I think the final act of the movie on board the Orca is one of the most exciting sea adventures ever filmed. There is great interplay between the three main characters who are stuck together on the tiny boat. The finale, when the boat begins to sink and there is no where to escape from the shark, brings true chills and a sense of helplessness.

Okay here's a sub-set of submarine movies... "On the Beach" (1959) "The Hunt for Red October" (1990) "Fer-de-Lance" (1974 made-for-TV) "Ice Station Zebra" (1968) "Operation Petticoat" (1959) "Run Silent, Run Deep" (1958) "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961) one that doesn't take place at sea but figures a submarine as a major plot point; "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming!" (1966) and my favourite, one that features a sub at the start but still takes place mostly underwater... "The Abyss" (1989) - make sure you check out the special edition as the original movie had 27 min cut out of it. The director's cut has that footage re-inserted and the movie becomes a classic. Hope this helps.

KNIFE IN THE WATER - By Roman Polanski My vote for best movie that takes place mostly at sea would be Roman Polanski's "Knife In The Water." An amazing murder mystery film that takes place mostly on this small yacht. It's so claustrophobic and chilling.
