A dry alcoholic drink is one that is free from sweetness and fruity flavor. The term "dry" was first used in the early 1700's to describe wine of the above characteristics.

Dry generally refers to the amount of sugar or residual sugars that are present in a drink. A dry wine is one that has had all of its fermentable sugars converted to alcohol. This does not mean that it is not sweet, but that all the fermentable sugars have been consumed by the yeast. The remaining product may remain sweet from the unfermentable sugars still present. A dry wine can also be quite fruity, particularly if it is made from a fruit other than grapes. This is not the same as wines that have their fermentation stopped before all of the sugars are fermented. This produces a sweet wine, but the flavour profile is quite different.
