A shield volcano is made of a very fluid lava called basalt. Because it is very fluid, it tends to flow great distances before it cools and hardens. This produces mountain that have relatively gently sloping sides. These volcanoes are made primarily of lava flows and are called shields because when you look at one from the side it looks about like a giant warrior's shield lying on the ground. A composite volcano (also know as a stratovolcano) is made of a much more viscous lava. This lava does not flow very far before cooling and solidifying. Additionally potentially it produces much more explosive eruptions (ala Mt. St. Helens). These mountains are made of alternating layres of lava flows and volcan ash. These conbine to produce a mountain with a conical shape and fairly steep sides. They are what most people think of with asked to visualize a volcano.
