  • According to wikipedia, a 1000ft tall lightning bolt is about 1 billion volts, and can deliver 500MJ of energy. That's the equivalent of running a 100W light bulb continuously for 5 million seconds, or about 58 days. So they are powerful, but not "run the world's electricity supply on one lightning bolt" powerful :) Check out the lightning entry on wikipedia for lots more info.
  • 6-16-2017 Nobody knows any way to measure a lightning bolt, although some related effects have been measured. A lot depends on where exactly the air will conduct, and a lot of studies have gone into that question: the creation of a lightning bolt is quite a pageant, fingers reaching this way and that as the air charges. But there is no straight answer to your question. Here is a unique flick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MUYsIjTKvk
