  • Yours is probably an artistic version of the sword. Battle versions are balanced much better than the decorative versions. I am going to guess that yours is balanced incorrectly, No?
  • Depending on how your Katana was made it determines its balance and ability to be wielded. A good Katana is extremely well balanced but you still need to practice the muscle movements to become competent with it. To answer your question though, Samurai used one or the other depending on the situation and sometimes both at the same time.
  • I paid several thousand dollars for my excellent Katana and it almost wields itself & is both fast and precise ... the piece of crap Katana that I beat posts with and do wrist rolls and general exercises with is awkward and slow ... it is all in the balance, as mentioned by the other answers ... Samurai would draw which ever blade weapon suited the situation best and would fight with either, both, or even empty handed.
  • The samurai used two swords the long and short (dai--sho) they were not allowed to weare both indoors while in a lords pres. the short sword was allowed, it was used indoors when needed the long sword would often be ristricted by narrow hallways etc. If you are having problems with your control it is probably a result of the sword being the wrong length for you. the sword must fit the user, cheap swords are all around 40" long, my sword was made for me and has a blade length of 28.5" which is correct for me therefore the balance and control are no problem. You may have the blade shortend which may help some what. If you have experiance shooting a bow your draw length is the same that a blade would be. You may also use a tape to measure your length by mesureing from the center of your palm to your sholder as you hold your arm straight out. If your blade is to long it will be to heavy for you, go online and buy a sword of proper length with a groved blade this makes the blade lighter, you caqn get a fairly nice sword rof around 600.000 bucks.
  • mine is about 1 kilos or maybe less..Sure it's hard, but i'm getting used to it lil by lil..samurais usually fight with a katana or maybe two or maybe even three...some of them don take a wakizashi... the ones who do,hide it somewhere and use it occasionally...Some choose a wakizashi over a katana.. their choice..
  • People that use swords of any kind and have mastered their use have trained with it for at least 10,000 hours. Scientific evidence has shown that for human beings to master anything it takes 10,000 hours of repetition doing it correctly to master it. Now if you look back into time those swordsman started when they were very little children. As children they would practice hours everyday with professional supervision. Let's say 4 hours a day...taking off one day a week would be 1248 hours a year. By the time they are in their early teens they would be deadly killers with that weapon. Whether it be a Medieval Knight, ancient Gaul, Samurai or any other warrior type. Same for Bowman like the Huns.
  • Just a warning: Put that crap katana up on the wall where it belongs. It's a wallhanger, and probably has a rat tail tang. It might break just by swinging it, and that's very dangerous. Go to a _real_ swordsmanship school of any style and learn proper swordsmanship or you'll end up getting hurt, or even worse, hurting others.
  • Both. But they prefered the katana
