The plants and flowers. I don't know why, but I have this urge to check whether they are fake or not.
-
The books or the lack of them. If there is a bookshelf, I automatically gravitate towards it and check out the titles. Books are like magnets for me and if I don't know a person well, I feel looking through the books they read will give me some insight. Good question!

The floor. I love hardwood and when I enter a room the first thing I look at is the floor.
-
Will try to see who, if anyone, is in the room and will then avoid going to that part of the room. After that, and art on the wall. I like looking at art on walls and wherever else.
-
color, then people.

Sometimes "odor" or "aroma". "Odor" if it's a cat person's house and the litter box is badly maintained (or a dog person's house with an unwashed dog); "aroma" if it's a restaurant.
-
If there's a china closet and what's in it.
-
The first thing I notice is the spaciousness of the room and the room layout (placement of furniture, etc.).

Interesting question! I thought color was the first thing that I noticed in a room, but trying it I find that the furniture is the first thing I look at. I think that my mind expects an empty room and so the furniture appears first.

... sound emanating from room as I approach ...

I tend to notice artwork first and the general "style" of the room.

I guess I have enough of my own. Here a photo of one wall in the parlor of my house:

I observe the furniture arrangement to determine if it is a welcoming and inviting layout, or if it instantly alienates visitors.
-
Being completely honest. I feel the atmosphere of the room first. I know... I'm weird

Artwork.

I look at the furniture (I like beatiful wooden cupboards, especially antiques), but I will also notice if there is any music, audible or inaudible (eg I'll always check out someone's CD collection :)

If it is a room filled with people I know, then the people of course. If there are no people, then the furnishings. We visited my "second son's" new place in San Pedro (Old School)..the first thing I noticed upon entering was how beautiful the furnishings were..a gorgeous stone/glass coffee table and matching endtables..a rug that exactly seemed to match the design of the tables but was purchased separately...the 46" flat-screen LCD TV...the futon sofa in front of the window.. his apartment seems to be nestled in the boughs of a tree, almost like a treehouse. It is simply loverly! :) ((hugs))

They say the eye goes to color first. That may be true, but perhaps on a subconscious level first. I always look at the room and it's arrangement. I'm a freak for a well decorated, inviting space.
