  • Honestly? It was a bunch of spoiled rotten rich punks who transferred their hatred of "daddy" (for not letting them play anyway they wanted or do anything they wanted) to the "Establishment", which also had certain rules it required people to operate by. Much was made of "moral highground" and "peace", but these brats really didn't give a damn about other people. They thought Vietnamese slaughtering other Vietnamese, Laotians, and Cambodians was fine. They only protested the U.S. government's role. They didn't want to participate. They would have protested any unpleasant thing they were asked to do, like work for a living. That was MY generation and I know about everything there is to know about it. I also know they were a small minority which made a lot of noise and got a lot of media coverage, which they loved. What are they all doing now? You might be surprised. Many run corporations and support very conservative candidates for office. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
  • They were all about getting out of the Viet Nam war so they were primarily protesting the war and promoting free love. The political battle over the war was bitter and heated. The Pentagon Papers were leaked out of the Pentagon clearly stated that Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense, knew full well Americans had virtually no chance of winning the Viet Nam war but continued adding American young men to that war adding to the over 500,000 trips already there and receiving the thousands of American soldier coffins coming home. Publishing of the Pentagon Papers basically totally vindicated all the "hippies" protests.
