As of yet I haven't heard a "more politically correct" term, but I have a good friend who does not consider the term "amputee" impolite in any way.

1st choice: Just refer to me as me, not by my missing leg. 2nd choice: Amputee is perfectly OK, if you don't ignore the rest of me. It is only one little part of who I am. You could also refer to me as the smart athletic woman with way cool crutches.

Man? Woman? Put your personal biases aside and think of one who is missing a limb as a person. It seems to work best that way.

if you're not the medical professional treating the situation, i don't think that we ought to even address it. well, insurance and police might, too. in these cases, i think i would say something like, "john, a brilliant achiever who needs treatment today for an infection at his amputation ... "

My neighbor is challenged by the absence of his right arm. Too darn long to say. My neighbor is missing his right arm. Doesn't sound right either. ??????????????????????? My neighbor is a man who has one arm. ???

i'd put it right up there with "fat guy", "baldy", "big butt", and "buck toothed" in referring to people by their physical appearance ... just use their NAME
