A Hormel official once stated that the original meaning of the name SPAM was "Shoulder of Pork and hAM. The name "Spam" was chosen in the 1930s when the product, whose original name "Hormel SpicedHam", was far less memorable, began to lose market share. The name was chosen from multiple entries in a naming contest.

Actually, the Hormel company sponsored a contest to name the product. The winning entry was a combination of spiced and ham - SPAM. The winner, Kenneth daughneau got $100 for it.

It doesn't stand for anything. The name came from a contest held to name the new product. It isn't ham or spicy ham. It's pork shoulder meat. YOu'd have to ask Ken, the man who named it why he chose that name.
