I'd have a stab and say Greek.

I believe it was Greek... "The name of the Greek letter {Iota}, {iota}, corresponding to the Roman I, i; the smallest letter of the Greek alphabet." http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/50120929?single=1&query_type=word&queryword=iota&first=1&max_to_show=10

Iota, being the 9th letter of the greek alphabet, is of course greek, with roots in Hebrew from the word "yodh" I don't know if the word iota, meaning small portion, has the same roots or not.
