im not sure how i know this, its prob cause i useto play star wars games, each lightsaber is accustemed to the user, green means guardian and blue is intellectual ect, but windu is the only one with a purple one because hes different from the rest. on a realistic scale they prob just wanted him to subtley stand out.

the actor asked for it and...... ...mace had complete knowledge of the force so lucas says he even created vaapad which is taking a element of the darkside and using it for good (what we saw in the movie when he used the force not his sabre to deflect a laser shot back at the robot that shot it) also the knowledge to absorb sideous energy beams and use them against sideous aging him in seconds to where he begged for help ...mace was the number two man, second only to yoda

I've read in internet that Samuel wants somethin' different from anybody & he get the purple saber. He also wants to be stronger than Darth Sidious, and he proved it only to be defeated by unexpected turnout of Anakin.

I know this answer is late in coming but it was totally random that I found this site and decided to give a little insight as to why the colours are given to what seems random but are actually ranks within the Jedi. Green is for Consular, Yellow is for Sentinel, Blue is for Guardian, Red is usually (but not always) for Sith (as example Exar Kun used a Silver bladed light saber as both Jedi & Sith)...however Purple for Samuel was because he asked for it, plus they used Green with Luke in Episode 6 because Blue was hard to see against the background of the Tatooine desert.

According to the EU (Expanded universe) This is how mace got his Purple crystal. "In 58 BBY, a young Mace Windu was sent to Hurikane on a mission as a Padawan. In exchange for helping the stone-encrusted native species, Windu was given a handful of the rare violet Hurrikane crystals, which he used to create his unique electrum lightsaber." Often the colour of the saber is an indicator of whether the wielder is a Jedi or a Sith: Red is a color commonly associated with the Sith, whereas green(consulars: those with a focus primarily in force skills), blue(guardian: those with a focus mostly in combat skills), yellow(sentinels: those with a mixed focus of combat and force skills) and occasionally purple(usually a mix of a blue and red crystal indicating some training in dark side forces as in the case of Mace Windu) or silver(rarely seen until later story lines and most commonly associated with the Empirial Knights in the Legacy stories) are considered Jedi colours.
