  • Why stop? A mix of soft food and kibble is often better for the dog than just one kind. The balance of nutrients and the different virtues of the two types of food make a combination more likely to give you an all round healthy animal. We have a small shelter, so we have learned a lot about feeding dogs (and cats), by experience. Generally, we provide soft food as part of the diet for the first eight months, until all the adult teeth are grown in. After that, much depends on the individual dog. Some dogs prefer kibble and eventually just stop eating the soft food. Others like it all their lives. As long as half the diet is kibble -- better for cleaning the teeth and promoting intestinal motility -- it does not hurt to feed a dog soft food. But do make sure any food you give your dog is of high quality. It might be a little more expensive, but your dog will be healthier and happier and live longer.
  • I think that it's such a huge change of environment for him that he's not eating because he doesn't feel like it. He'll eat once he feels comfortable enough to. Do what you can to make him feel welcome and a part of his new family.
  • I mix a bit of moist in with the kibble every feeding time. My dog is a bit of a food snob, and really only likes moist, but kibble is good for teeth and helps keep her from being gassy. So I mix the two twice a day. She eats, she's healthy and she's happy.
