Both. Thanks for the custom and thanks for the good (hopefully) service :)
-
Both. But I'm Canadian and we say thank you and excuse me all of the time.

The cashier should thank the customer for the business and the customer should thank the cashier for excellent customer service. I am finding that many times the cashier says nothing at all especially at fast food establishments. I mean that they say nothing after asking you for your order.
-
Both... and when in doubt, be polite and say it.
-
Cashier, mainly. They are thanking the customer for their patronage. The customer has no need to thank the employee, other than to be polite. You don't have to thank someone for doing exactly what they are paid to do, but manners says that it is still polite!

When I'm at work in the shop I'm employed at I alwasy say thank you when a customer makes a purchase. Yet I always say thank you when I have just purchased something. Since it's an exchange and both sides are benefitting from it, then I reckon both should say thanks. I would give you a + rating, but the limit thingy has just come up...Sorry mate. xx

FUNNY STORY: We both said it at the same time. It was awkward.
-
They should say thank you for your business. I also thank them for helping me, especially when they have been particularly helpful.
-
Both...they thank me for shopping there and I thank them for bagging it up.
-
Gah, yeah, I'm always wondering about this too. Usually I just say thank you, just to be polite, but it seems kinda weird when we both say it..
-
Both, actually. The cashier should say "thanks" for shopping at the store, and the customer should say "thanks" for ringing him/her up!
-
I always tell my cashiers to say, "Thank you, enjoy your meal" after they ring a customer up. But, as a customer, I'll almost always say it, too, unless I get lousy service, such as a cashier who is one his or her phone, or talking to a co-worker instead of paying attention to ringing me up.
-
Cashier. You just helped pay his wages.
-
Both, you're helping each other.
-
Both.
-
I think it's nice if both do as both are giving and receiving.
-
The cashier for sure and I almost always say thank you just to be polite.
-
