Why does the screen darken in split second flashes while playing my ps3? i've been told it's cause i don't run it with a hdmi cable...

That's hogwash. No cable should make your screen flicker. Try another cable, or try the cable on another TV and make sure if it's the cable or not. If that doesn't work, make sure it's not the TV's fault. After that, I suggest looking into the possibility that it could be you PS3.
