  • LED ZEPPELIN - Jimmy Page was drinking with Moon and Entwhistle, who were bitching about their band mates Daltrey and Townshend. They joked about the two of them starting a band with Jimmy, and one of them said "Yeah, that will go over like a lead balloon". When Jimmy formed his own band, he remembered this and thought "Lead Zeppelin" would be good, both from that conversation and the heavy/light contradiction similar to the band named IRON BUTTERFLY. They decided to drop the "a" so Americans wouldn't mispronounce it. Interesting question. I am glad you asked it. It triggered me to find this site, some of these are very interesting. http://library.thinkquest.org/4626/rock.htm
  • UB40 named themselves after the unemplyment forms because they were all on the dole.
  • I can think of a few inspired by Beatle members. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - Took their name from a song performed by The Bonzo Doo Dah Dog band in the film Magical Mystery Tour. THE RAMONES - Took their name from the alias Paul McCartney used to use when checking into hotels. He would sign in as Paul Ramone. When the Ramones formed, each member took the last name Ramone, Joey Ramone, Dee Dee Ramoney and so on. Even new members took the last name Ramone, so they were The Ramones. WINGS - Was thought of when Paul McCartney was in the hospital wing during one of Linda's deliveries. L7 - There's a female grunge band from 1985 called L7. Which if you form your fingers into L on your right hand and 7 on your left hand, then put them together they form a square. But, if you go back to a Paul McCartney & Wings song called "C Moon" (1972) one of his lyrics goes "It Will Be L7 And I'd Never Get To Heaven If I Filled My Head With Glue What's It All To You?" So you tell me, did L7 get their name from McCartney too? A bunch can be found here: http://web.njit.edu/~ronkowit/names/rock.htm
  • Mott The Hoople got their name from a novel by Willard Manus, which their producer had been reading and he suggested it to them. I've never read the book myself, but I have reason to believe it is the story of a hoople who was known as Mott, hence the title.
    • Bijou Pleasurette
      And wtf is a hoople?
  • The Jam were named after a woman's menstrual cycle....
  • TLC got their name from the initials of their members' nicknames (Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas).
