  • In the classic tales, it was the sword in the stone (placed there by Merlin) that gave Arthur the right to rule (by Arthur removing it, thus proving himself rightful heir)...NOT the sword given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. The sword given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake came with a magical SCABBARD that prevented the possessor from bleeding from his wounds (thus, giving the possessor much more endurance in battle). It had nothing to do with Arthur's ability to rule or right to rule.
