Maybe his parents killed him and left him for the gators - "disposing of the evidence". They might have thought it better for him to die in a way that would protect the family name rather than face the death penalty at the hands of authorities. They had a lot more knowledge of his whereabouts than they let on.

I think he's faking his death to throw off the cops and his parents are helping him to do it. Of course, it's possible that he really did commit suicide in some remote location...but from what I've read, that's a very unusual tactic for suicide-prone people. The OTHER possibility is that the parents of his fiance did him in...and actually, that makes quite a bit of sense...
