Why does God give commandments?
I have my own thoughts on this subject, but it seems like many people think the commandments have no real basis: that God just picked a bunch of arbitrary stuff to have us do or not do, and will punish us if we do the opposite. How about you?

The same reason any king gives his subjects commandments. The same reason modern governments give their people commandments. if you don't know the laws then you'll break them.

God gives us commandments to protect us from harm and emotional turmoil.

He doesn't. Human beings SAY he gives commandments, in the hope people will be more likely to obey them. Religions have always mirrored the needs and fears of the cultures that invent them.

Because God is love, and because of His love, we have His Commandments. I John 5:2,3 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” In this, the Age of Grace, keeping God's commandments is accomplished by the "renewing of the mind". In this manner we live with God's love in our lives which is the opposite of living in fear. In understanding this we realize that it is God who helps us avoid the punishments of life that come to anyone living in fear.
