  • Most places I've lived in don't. A couple of big older houses I lived in had basements but modern houses generally don't.

      Many modern house are built on concrete "rafts" rather than having deep foundations dug into the ground so there is no scope for a basement. There are builders who will dig down to put a basement under an existing house (this is popular in some parts of London where property prices are high) but occasionally you read news stories of these causing houses to collapse...
