  • These days I think its media fed. But the 'beauty standard' as you call it has had many shifts in the past century from curvy to crack/heroine skinny and back and forth again. But given the two options you listed I'd say its more cultural.
  • Both. It's largely cultural, as differing standards across cultures demonstrate, but objective studies indicate that some standards are constant. For example, babies, who are too young to have been influenced by cultural standards, tend to respond more positively to people with relatively symmetrical features than to those who don't have them.
