Came here to say this. Specifically, grapefruit juice can interfere with the body's ability to break down drugs in the digestive system. Pharmacists calculate the amount of drug needed to intake by mouth by assuming a certain amount of the drug gets broken down in the digestive system by liver enzymes. Grapefruit juice is known to break down those enzymes, causing the drug to not break down in the digestive system and instead be absorbed into the blood stream at much higher concentrations than expected, causing overdose. The same thing would happen if a person took a pill designed for oral entry and instead injected the contents into an artery. This sort of interaction can be fatal in extreme cases.

  • After a blood test, my doctor told me my cholesterol was at 168. She said to add oatmeal to my diet. She never mentioned grapefruit juice. After about 3 months of oatmeal added, my cholesterol is now at 143. So, I don't need any chemical meds. I like my grapefruit juice with vodka occasionally.
