I have ridden on trains thousands of times. I regularly commute to work by train. I have also traveled often by train in parts of the US, Europe, and Asia. It's unfortunate that our national rail system here in the US is not as good as those abroad, though individual cities -- New York, Chicago, and so forth -- have quite good commuter rail transportation. Chicago's is so good that I gave up my car a few years ago.

I have to assume you are referring to long range rather than commuter trains. I have traveled from Sacramento to Chicago a couple of times. I had a roomette to sleep in for the 2 nights. I have also gone from LA to Chicago, New York, Washington and back. Another trip was to New Orleans via Chicago. It was fun and all meals were included. You go for the experience and not for the cost and time involved.

If you like trains, you can ride a live steam train on the Strasburg Railroad and visit the adjacent Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Ronks (Lancaster area) and easily spend a good part of the day there. On the other side of the puddle, the National Railway Museum in York, England also has an extensive collection.
