Why isn't lightning just a straight line?

It is made of hundreds of small steps-like pieces and it is trying to find the easiest path to the ground even if it might not be a straight line.

it was straight it wouldn't be awsome. it would look like a giant glow stick.=)

Lightning is made of electrons, electrons have a negative charge and are unstable. Eletrons (negative charge) are attracted to protons (positive charge). The electrons move to highly consentrated areas of protons.
