• A switch connects multiple devices, such as computers and printers, together so that they can communicate and share files in a network. Fiber is one type of network wire, used for spanning longer distances, the other most common being copper "CAT" cable used on almost every computer. A switch with 48 ports can connect 48 devices, and usually a switch that size is used in a large office or data center where it may be connected to additional switches. Cisco is one brand of switches, other common brands include Dell, Netgear and HP.
